A Little Cycling Tour in Nakagawa town ~art, nature and history~
manufacturing of Kazariyama
HAKATA GION YAMAKASA

Nakagawa town, located in western part of Fukuoka prefecture, is a town with rich nature. Not only its wealthy nature but also there are other things that would get you fascinated.

It’s a historical town where you can find the oldest artificial irrigation in Japan. It is also known as a town of art where many artists who are attracted by its nature-rich environment come and settle down and art their artifacts.

Kazariyama floats

The theme of this tour is “manufacturing”. We can make a part of Kazariyama floats of Hakata Gion Yamakasa, a traditional festival in Fukuoka. The larger Kazariyama floats stand over ten maters tall and weight over two tons. 14 of them stand spread out across the city from July 1 to 14 asdecorative floats.

Do you know Hakata Gion Yamakasa？

It’s one of the most popular summer festival in Fukuoka, with men racing through the streets while bearing 1-ton Kakiyama floats on their shoulders. With a history of over 700 years, it is also a UNESCO cultural heritage. It is held every year during the first half of July and climaxes with a spectacular time trial race in the early morning hours of July 15.

Come join us on a bicycle riding tour to Nakagawa town, we’ll start from Hakata Minami station which is just 8 mins away from Hakata station by Shinkansen.
We have an English tour guide, so please feel free to join us!
We can get rental bicycles at out meeting point, Hakata minami-Eki Mae Building.

ちいさな町めぐり　vol.2
〜自転車でめぐる、那珂川町のアート・自然・歴史〜
博多祇園山笠　飾り山づくり体験

那珂川町は、福岡県の西部に位置する豊かな自然がシンボルの町。
でも、魅力は自然だけではないのです。

日本書紀にも記されている日本最古の人工用水路「裂田溝」がある歴史深い町、緑豊かな環境に惹かれてアーチストや作家が数多く移り住んでる、アートの町でもあるのです。

2回目の開催となる今回のツアーは「ものづくり」がテーマ。
博多の夏の風物詩である「博多祇園山笠」の山を制作する白水英章さんに教えてもらいながら、飾り山制作の一部を体験できます。
ユネスコ文化遺産でもある伝統的な「山笠」で、実際に飾られる飾り山の制作に関われる機会は滅多にありません。

古くから伝わる博多の文化を感じ、伝統を味わう体験をぜひ。

博多駅から新幹線で8分300円、博多南駅を出発点に
歴史深く美しい「裂田溝」や、櫛田神社とも実は繋がりがあるといわれている「伏見神社」をゆったりめぐり、伝統のものづくりを楽しみましょう！
通訳ガイドも一緒なので、英語でも安心してご参加いただけます。
※自転車は博多南駅前ビルにてお貸しします。
